BOSKE, COSTA RICA

The Moth has just finished the first home of its newest project, Boske. Located in the South Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, this beautiful forest property is home to a myriad of wildlife.  Home to a big variety of tress, toucans, parrots, monkeys, sloths and an array of other animals, we are choosing to limit our impact, allowing for human inhabitants to have an out of the ordinary experience of truly living in respectful communion with the wilderness all around us.   The land itself is 2.7 hectares, with our plans holding 3 houses and a retreat space, which is being built as we speak.

This Hamlet will also include tree top nets and nests, a natural pool, and a movement and events stage, featuring an out of the ordinary jungly amphitheater. All meticulously designed with beauty, harmony and awe inspiring communion with the wilderness at its core.

We are currently having a blast designing, building and planting our food forest, ornamental and medicinal cornucopian gardens.  Originally a cacao plantation, we are in a process of slowly recreating a human/nature ecosystem where we can inhabit the forest with respect whilst giving back, our constant balancing act.

We have opted for a modern design inspired by vernacular Caribbean architecture, adding dazzling openness and high ceilings that allow for impressive jungle permeability. Our goal being to bring the awe of nature to anyone stepping into this space.

The Moth has designed a conscious micro community and eco retreat center in Guatemala with farm-to-table and sustainable construction principles

ISLA VERDE

Isla Verde is a flourishing eco-hotel, farm-to-table restaurant, and retreat venue on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Our first hamlet ever, our it was conceived as a quadruple bottom line business. Its creation followed sustainable construction principles – growing from scratch into an icon of ecological lodging and a notable financial success in less than five years, is now still operated successfully by its new owners 18 years after its birth. First regenerating the site’s barren land for years, reforesting, and planting food with permaculture principles, we pioneered environmental construction with collaborating experts from all over the world. We hold Islaverde dearly in our hearts as our very first child.

The site became a living classroom in how to adapt sustainable construction methods for an isolated, barren mountainside site – learning flexibility over purism to ensure longevity and beauty while best serving the environment. Serving a healthy and creative farm-to-table menu, Isla Verde became home to one of the most successful restaurants on the Lake. Employing and teaching the local Mayan community, staff growth was also central, creating abundant opportunities for their involvement in the business. Constructed and launched with just $30K, Isla Verde was sold turnkey 10 years later for roughly 20 times its initial investment – and remains a hugely successful business today.
